The large stone arc bridge in the centre of Luxembourg was built in 1903 and was at the time of construction the largest stone arc bridge in the world. It is now falling apart. Individual stones are sliding out of position. To block the stones from falling out and down in the valley, spears has been inserted into the arc, with smaller metal plates at the end to hold the stones in place, see photo below.

It has been decided to take down the bridge, reconstruct it and reapply the stone surface. It is a long process and because the bridge is part of the main traffic routes in Luxembourg City, it becomes even more complicated.

First step is to construct a temporary bridge next to Pont Adolphe, that can take the traffic during the years that Pont Adolphe is reconstructed. This is the blue metal bridge on the photos. The crossing was connected in December 2013. The road surface is now under preparation for traffic.
